Can anyone recommend a small hotel or B&B in Ulm? Sightseeing tips also welcome. We will be there for a few days in April, visiting our son who is an exchange student at the University.
I've only driven through Ulm, so I have no recommendations for lodging. For sightseeing, the region south of Ulm along the border of Bavaria and Baden-Würrtemburg has a particularly high concentration of Baroque churches, monasteries and abbeys. I think the best known example is in either in Biberach or Ochsenhausen. A little further south, Lindau im Bodensee is worth a visit.
In 2011 we were in Ulm for four days. We stayed at the Ibis hotel which is just a short walk from the train station. The old town is easy to get around in without getting lost and has some interesting architecture. There are several restaurants that brew their own beer. The Ulm Dom is the tallest in the world and is protestant. Ulm is part of Swabia so you can sample the excellent Swabian cuisine. Some places serve only Swabian food, others have it in a separate part of the menu. You will have to try it. There is the Donauschwabisches Zentralmuseum dedicated to the Swasische people who went east down the Danube to settle and farm. There are also several other museums, the Bread Museum being one that interested us. You can go from Ulm to Tubingen which is a university town and its old city center is a tourist mecca. Beautiful! My ancestors came from a village halfway between Ulm and Tubingen so I feel at home in that area. Send me a personal message if you wish.
This past December, we stayed at Landhaus Erkheim in the small village of Erkheim, a short distance from Ulm. This B&B had large, ensuite rooms, with a restaurant downstairs.
