I'm trying to figure out where to stay while we're in the Waschau this summer. I'm leaning towards either Krems or Durnstein, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm fluent in German so finding an English speaking accommodation isn't necessary. We also favor non-touristy over towns with more excitement/tourists. I'm steering clear of Melk because it sounds really touristy. One more thing: we'd rather stay in a B&B, Zimmer or pension rather than a hotel. Any suggestons on towns, or better, actual establishments would be great.
I can without reservation recommend the Ilse Brauneis Pension in Mautern, just across the river from Krems.
(http://www.mautern.at/zimmer/brauneis.htm") . Nice setting, clean, and very reasonable. The family also has their own apricot orchard, and they make some of the best Apricot Schnapps you'll ever taste. Krems/Mautern is also a great departure spot for tours of the Wachau - foot, bike, or ship. Enjoy
Dax That looks like a really good find. I went to your link and found it broken. It looks like Frau Brauneis has her own webpage now which I found through the main page of your link, at www.ilsezimmer.at . Kennen sie das Frau Brauneis ein bischen Englisch spricht? Mein Deutsche sehr schwer ist.
Nigel - thanks for the . I stayed there a few years ago and I thought I could recommend her. So I looked for a web link and found this one, apparently it's been changed. I can't remember if she speaks English, given her age I'd guess she speaks at least a little. I do know that a lot of people from many different countries on bike tours pass through her house, I don't think language is a barrier for her.
