Just looking for a safe place for two seniors... a bed and breakfast, mixed hostel, hotel around $150
Unless things have changed, hostels in Bavaria are restricted to age under 28's. Does anyone have any info on this?
Here are some places to try. Blauer Bock and Viktualienmark are near Marienplatz.
Blauer Bock
Viktualienmarkt
Royal
Uhland
Seibel
I just used priceline and bid on a hotel in "City Center South" for Munich which is close to the train station, and I requested a 4 star hotel, and bid $85 per night, and got the Maritim Munich Hotel, right by the train station....looks GREAT and usually goes for over $150 per night. Score! Gotta love priceline! :)
If your ambition is to stay close to the train station then I'm glad you got what you wanted. There are much nicer areas around the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz with hotels about the same price and you don't have to deal with the seediness of the train station.
Maritim Munich Hotel
Is that a single or a double room?
Is breakfast included (the hotel's website says breakfast buffet is $30 pP)? I believe the links I provided all have breakfast included.
I would stongly recommend staying at Hotel Munchner Kindl. The prices are unbeatable and the place is nice with a small tavern downstairs that is run by the innkeepers. We stay there every time we travel to Munich (the last time was for Octoberfest in Sept). It is right off from the Marienplatz and a few minutes walk to the train station but close to all the major attractions. The last time we were there they showed us some of their old black and white family photos. Its a really nice small place that makes you feel welcome. Breakfast is included in the price. If I sound like a commercial for them, its only because we have such a great time when we stay there.
Richard, actually, that looks like a really good deal, as long as the price they show, €39 EZ, is offered most of the time. I am certainly not a **** kind of guy. I've added it to my list of links. That price, BTW, does NOT include breakfast, but still, €47,50 with breakfast is an awfully good deal for Munich. I'll have to try them next time I'm there.
I was well into my 60's and my daughter and I stayed at the Wombats Hostel right around the corner from the Munich main HPT. It was immaculate and quite. I felt comfortable there. We had a private room with an insuite bath and shower. They provided bedding. I would definately stay there again.

The also have a hostel in Berlin and Vienna.
We stayed near the Munich train station last year and didn't like it. Although the hotel was OK, the area was seedy and not nice for walking with little kids. I'd rather stay near the Marienplatz and pay for a cab to the train station.
Mary,
First of all, there is NO age limit to staying in DJH hostels in Bavaria, that was abolished last spring. (I was told that at the DJH hostel in Munich--the main one). As a senior I can second that suggestion for staying at the Wombat's in Munich, only a few minutes from the train station, very clean, secure, and helpful...the noise doesn't bother me. Absolutely no problems when I was there at the end of June 2009. You can take U-Bahn to the DJH hostel and then walk a few blocks straight down to it. When I was there in 1971, there was no U-Bahn system then. Wombat's is much more centrally located if you want to be close to the train station.
