Where to stay in Munich

Going to Munich for a couple of days in June--mostly to tour Dachau. What area (neighborhood) would be best to stay for proximity to points of interest and travel junctures? How long a trip to Dachau?

downtown Munich near Marienplatz or Viktualienmarkt will put you in the middle of the pedestrian zone. There are many more things to see in Munich in addition to Dachau.

"How long a trip to Dachau?" From San Francisco? From the Munich Hbf to Dachau is a 38 min trip, total - 21 min by the S2 ( Richtung (direction) Petershausen) to Dachau station, then a 10 min wait for the bus (#726) and 7 min on the bus. The bus stop at Dachau station is well marked. From Marienplatz it's about 4 min longer, same S2. The tour takes about 2½ hours, so half a day is all you need. Darrell, We have been to Munich three times and two of those trips we stayed at Hotel Europaischer. We love that hotel and any future trips to Munich we will plan to stay there. It is directly across the street from the Hauptbanhof with of course easy acces to the S and U bahn, they offer early bird discounts when booking online, the rooms are nice and clean, the breakfast is excellent with hot and cold food and the staff has always been very kind and accomodating. It is also an easy walk to Marienplatz and we have always felt safe. Their website is www.heh.de and in the upper right hand corner you should see a British flag to change everything to English. Dachau is a great day trip but one you could do in half a day. There are so many other things in Munich that you could do as well. I would spend at least 2 days there if not more, if your trip will allow. There are still things we haven't seen yet and can't wait to go back. If you need recommendations for restaurants or other things to do let me know. Have a great trip!

The concentration camp visit is very moving/disturbing at the same time. The plaque honoring the American forces who crushed the Nazi's presence is a must read. Don't forget to visit a few beer gardens also. They made Munich famous.
