We will be in Luzern and Lausanne for one night each in July. Any thoughts on the hotels listed in the Switzerland 2007 book?
Hi Carol,
If you plan to splurge in Lucerne, I highly recommend the Chateau-Hôtel Gütsch, romantically located on Gütsch hill, easily reached by a cog train from river / street level. A taxi will drive you to the front entrance, of course. Google.com will get you Gütsch information. Hotel Balances is a wonderful hotel, too - right on Lake Lucerne and in the midst of Lucerne action, but not inexpensive.
If you want to be a little farther away from the lake, but not too far, and in less expensive rooms, I suggest this...

Sorry, I've only day-tripped to Lausanne and on that occasion found rooms in an ordinary hotel in Sion, not too far from Lausanne by train. Sion is a beautiful small town location and much less expensive than Geneva or Lausanne.
Have a great trip ! P.
Carol,
http://www.hotel-regina.ch/ for lausanne, nice and clean. The Manor Department store is a 1 min walk -- has everything you'll need even dinner. Great shops short walk and the train station is 10 min walk. We had a nice time -- good luck.

Carol, Look into Hotel Basletor (www.baslertor.ch) for a nice place to stay in Lucerne. It is close to the old town part, not far from the train station. We had a lovely view of the river and the City Wall. It was inexpensive and clean.
When we went to Luzern we stayed at Hotel des Alpes. Our room was nice and you couldn't beat the location. It was close to the train station, faced the river and eating breadfast on the balcony and looking up at Mount Pilatus was really great.
In Lausanne we stayed at the Minotel AlaGare. This hotel was not listed in Rick's book. It was close to the train station and the room was nice.
