I just learned about this really kewl hike in Igls, about 5 minutes down the road from Salzburg. On Tues. nights in the summer they take a 40 minute hike BY LANTERN LIGHT to a mountain top cafe and then back down after some festivities. We want to stay one night in Igls for that. DOes anyone know how late the bus back to Salzburg runs - or a nice place to stay in Igls. Thanks

The Igls I know in Austria is outside of Innsbruck, not Salzburg. It was the site of the downhill ski competitions of the 1976 Olympics. It's a tiny village outside of the city. Igls is 187 km from Salzburg, driving time is estimated at 1 hour and 50 minutes. You might want to factor that into your plans.

I stayed in a gasthaus in another small village some distance away on the other side of Innsbruck. I was with a college group in town for the Olympics, and I can't remember the name of the town, sorry. Anyway, a 30 year old recommendation wouldn't do you much good. :)

Hikes are all over the Alps and well-marked. I'd settle for some place you can reach easily. There are websites full of advice for that. The Austrian Mountaineers (ÖAV) can provide detailed info.
I'd also check out local festivals, because summer weekends are very popular for those - in every village! You can get linked there via the Austrian tourist website www.austria.info
I bet there is a Waldfest on your route (and you can always bring a lantern along). Stay safe!
