Where to stay in Berlin

Wonder what would be a good area to start looking for accommodations in Berlin for 3 nights next May. Like to keep it around $100 per night. Not opposed to staying outside of town if close to public transportation. We will be arriving by car so need safe parking. Would like something " charming" if possible rather than a chain hotel. A gasthaus? Thanks.

We will be staying at Pension Peters in Berlin next July. It was recommended in the RS guide and appealed to us because of price, neighborhood, nearby public transportation, and secure parking nearby. We will also arrive by car. We have not stayed yet but emails with staff were very pleasant and quick. There are many reviews on tripadvisor. We like simple, family-run places so I have a feeling we will like this one.

Pension Peters is extremely overrated in my opinion.

I'd book something in Prenzlauer Berg if you are looking for a quieter neighborhood.

Dottie,

I don't agree with a previous comment that Pension Peters is "extremely overrated".

Pension Peters is located in a nice area, very convenient to transportation, the rooms are comfortable and clean and the staff is wonderful (and very helpful). I'd highly recommend it. There are some nice restaurants in the area, and if you're interested in local tours, the Original Berlin Walks departs from the area of Bahnhof Zoo, which is about a 10 minute walk from the Pension.

Happy travels!

In my experience Prenzlauer Berg is not "party central" any more but "nappy valley" - heavily gentrified and lots of young professional families. The area immediately around Eberswalder Strasse U-Bahn station is still pretty lively but much of it is quiet.

Another plug for Pension Peters. The staff was great and very helpful. Breakfast was a nice spread. There is a parking garage a block and a half away were we parked for 10 euros a day and took the bus everywhere we went. Have fun!

We stayed at Pension Peters in 2009 for 4 nights and found it very comfortable and close to most sites.
Highly recommend Pension Peter
