Where to stay for 3 nights in Bavaria

We will be in Bavaria for 3 nights in mid-October. Plan to see the castles, Zugspitze, Oberamergau, Mittenwald and drive through the countryside to see fall colors, do some not too strenuous hiking in and around some mountain lakes lakes. We will have a rental car and will be traveling from Salzburg to the area then onto Munich for 4 nights before returning home.

Wanted to get some recommendations on staying in towns such as Reutte, Fussen, Oberamergau, Mittenwald or some other of your favorite cities or villages. We aren't looking for fancy restaurants or vibrant night life. Just happy to picnic on our balcony enjoying views of the mountains.

Thank you,

Dave

"Just happy to picnic on our balcony enjoying views of the mountains."

Then I've got the perfect recommendation for you in Garmisch-Partenkirchen:

See those three rooms on the top floor? You can't really see from the picture, but each one has a small balcony. And your view? A magnificent vista of the Zugspitze. When you sit on the balcony watching the light of the rising sun reflect off the mountain... well, I can't describe it in words. Luckily, someone has posted a picture on the internet from that same vantage point:

Composer Richard Strauss, who lived around the corner, was inspired by just such a view to write his "Eine Alpensinfonie".

I agree with Tom. Our favorite town in Germany is Garmisch! And it's almost impossible to get a bad view from any room in that whole town!!! We've stayed here twice. We used Garmisch as a base to see Neuschwanstein, Zugspitze and could have done the other two towns you mentioned if we'd had time. Enjoy!!!

We spent five nights in Mittenwald and just loved it. It is smaller than Garmish and you can easily walk anywhere. Garmish was fine, but a little too big and spread out for me. Mittenwald is big enough to have plenty of choices for eating. We stayed at Gastehaus Edlhuber, a small B&B which was perfect. We had a large apartment for about $105 a night. Lots of space, a small kitchen, new bathroom and great fluffy down comforter. Plus a balcony with view of the mountains. Breakfast was great, and the owner was very friendly.

Hi Dave,

I'd have to go with Mittenwald. The postcard perfect Bavarian village with a mountain backdrop. We stayed twice at the Pension Schwalbennestl. Nice place, good buffet breakfast and killerbalcony views overlooking Mittenwald and the Alps. The price is unbeatable (IMO) also.

website is in German only, yet you can correspond in English.

We have some photo's of the pension and the area at:

In Breitenwang (connected to Reutte), I can highly recommend Hotel Moserhof. It’s old-time classy but very reasonable with great balcony views of the mountains. The rooms are quite large, and the on-site restaurant offers many menu options and outdoor seating…more mountain views. It's nice but not fancy. Check it out at http://www.hotel-moserhof.at/econtent.html

Thank you all for the suggestions. You have been a big help in making our traveling decisions. We had stayed at Hotel Staubbach in Lauterbrunen a couple of years ago and enjoyed the balcony view of the valley every night. We look forward to doing the same in the Tirol.

Once again, thank you. You're the best.
