We will be renting a car in Frankfurt and driving to Cinque Terre in early July. Wondering about a good place in Switzerland for an over night stop. We will be passing close to Basel and Lucerne but wondering if anyone can recommend something off the beaten track?

Lucerne is about half way there and it's hard to beat a more scenic location on that route.

Yeah, I was just coming in to mention Lucerne. If you can arrive early afternoon it's a nice city to spend a half day in for a tiny tiny taste of Switzerland on your way through, rather then spending valuable time getting off the beaten track and back on it the next day...
