where to stay as a base Provence

My friend and I are traveling for the first time to Provence and need advice on a good base in Orange, Nimes, and or Isle sur sorgur/ Pernes les Fountaines. We are hoping to find something clean/safe for 150 euro per night range. Any help would be appreciated we have already exhausted most of the book recommendations

With a range between Nimes and Orange, you should get lots of different recommendations. We just booked what seems to be a very nice 2-star hotel in Avignon for 86E/night. Its the Hotel Le Colbert and its rated #1 on www.tripadvisor.com. I can see it on Google earth and its about 7 minutes from the train station.

I'd settle on a city/town first and work from there for a specific place. For me it would be Nimes since it's more centrally located as well as giving you more to do later in the day when you come back from wandering around. For a place almost as good and closer to the eastern stuff, Orange would work fine. Isle sur sorgue (note spelling) and Pernes les Fountaines are kind of deserted. If you want a smaller place, settle for medium and consider Carpentras.

Nanci: Have you tried the Hotel les Nevons in Isle sur la Sorgue? It would seem to be well inside your budget, even in high season, and the hotel is clean and modern. The owners could not be nicer or more helpful. We assembled a picnic on market day and enjoyed a feast on the balcony of our hotel room; the owners cheerfully opened a bottle of wine for us and loaned us glasses so we could do without the plastic travel cup we had brought. They have a website, so you may want to inquire there if you have not already done so.

We found Orange to be a sort of depressing place, though that was years ago. I'd say, if you want to be just a bit closer to Les Baux, the Sorge valley, and things west, consider Arles.

I second the Hotel Nevons in Isle sur le Sorgue. It is reasonable and has parking. Isle is very close to all the villages and there are lots of nice restaurants. The Sunday market is wonderful and on the weekend many antique people come from all over France to their shops there. In the new annex of the Nevons you can get a huge room for 75 euros a night. Huge room. There are fancier places out of town, but we like the Nevons. The people that run it are lovely, the breakfast is good and they have free wifi in the lobby .

We loved Gordes, the setting for gthe movie "A Good Year." Lots of options in several price ranges. Not a good idea in summer as I am told it is filled with tourists from Paris.
