We are going to drive from North of Florence to the Reutte/Fusen area. We plan to go through Milan and North into Switzerland with one overnight there to break the journey to Reutte. Any input on the best route and where to stay. We initially figured we'd stop in Lugano, but Lake Como is a possibility too I think??? Any ideas, input. Need hotel recommendations too. Family of four. Thanks.
Hi Margaret,
... we've never been to Lake Como or the town of Varenna (on the lake), but we have seen Rick Steves using the ALBERGO MILANO hotel and eating their food on a TV episode of Travels in Europe. He did mention it as being the kind of place he likes to recommend... Just click on the above link for info.
... ciao! P
Hi
I have a suggestion: I am a member of an association of B&B and you can find all of us at
www.ospitipercasa.com.
Some of us are on the lake, some on the mountains, some closer to Como or to the way to/from Lugano.
On the web site, you can ask for availability clicking on http://www.ospitipercasa.com/booking.html
and see where each of us is.
As you might know, B&B is an house where you can get hospitality and get in contact with local people and habits.
If you want to know this place, you should not miss this.
Regards
Silvia

I like Silvia's idea...there are great places all around the lake...Kent from Oregon would recommend Menaggio on the western side of the lake...and that makes sense for you since you are driving from the lake to Switzerland...but be careful on the road from Menaggio to Switzerland...it is narrow and can be scary with big buses coming the oposite direction.
We stayed in Bellagio, and found it to be everything we wanted and more....we drove there from Milan, then took the ferry across the lake to Menaggio.
Stayed in the Villa Cipressi at Varenna a few years ago. Great place and area. Would go back again. bob
