Where to start Germany trip

I am not sure where to start our trip. We most likely will fly into Frankfurt. Where should we start our trip? The Rhine or Stuttgart or Black Forest?

In the past I've flown into Frankfurt and immediately gone to the northern Black Forest (Bad Herrenalb) or the Mosel (went through the Mittelrhein on the way). I've also gone through Stuttgart on my way to Bavaria.

I think I would recommend the Mittelrhein because it's a little earsier to get to (and less time, you'll be tired), and you can use regional trains and a Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket from Mainz.

Actually, none of those places take too much time. Depends on what you want to see.

If flying into Frankfurt, I like to start on the Rhine because it's so convenient. After being on a plane for a long time, the less time spent in transport to your first destination, the better.

Start it in Frankfurt, since it is one of Germanys' most historic cities. This lets you walk around outside to get that jet lag overcome, see quite a few sites, stay overnight and then have a wonderful fresh start the next morning in what every direction you want to go.

You could also fly into Zurich (lots less hassle than Frankfurt airport) take the train from the airport to Konstanz at Lake Constance (probably half hour trip, Konstanz has a Swiss and a German railway station, it's a border town right on the lake). Sightsee in Konstanz, take in the flower filled island of Mainau and go to the Black Forest and Stuttgart from there. Konstanz has a huge old cathedral and the most amazingly funny modern fountain right downtown. The entire Lake Constance (Bodensee) area is beautiful.
