Where to spend night south of Paris

We are planning on renting a car while traveling two weeks in France. Our plan is to travel to Montpellier the first part of our trip. I am unsure should rent a car at CDG airport or take a cab/ Metro to a hotel South of Paris to sleep off our jet lag and rent a car in the morning.

We arrive at 2:00 in the afternoon and don't think we'll be up to the long drive. Where would you recommend stay our first night in France and how do you recommend we get there?

Thanks for you input on driving from the airport that has been one of our concerns. Renting a car from the airport might be the easiest. Since we need a larger car - we will be traveling with 5 people and they may have a better selection there.

The TGV to Montpellier will cost between $600 and $800 for the four of us. I don’t know if the cost of the train ride is worth it.

Is there an inexpensive way to get to an hour or two out of Paris and still be near a place to rent a car?

Kathleen: You could take the RER B from CDG and transfer at St.Michel/Notre Dame to RER C to Versailles, spend the night there and pick up a rental car in the morning. BUT: Why not take the RER B into Paris, spend the afternoon & night in Paris and go to Versailles on the RER in the morning for your car. A few hours in Paris are not to be dismissed.
