Where to sleep in Barcelona

I will be in Barcelona for 4 nights in July. I am a solo 50+ woman traveler and am trying to decide where to stay. RS book has a variety of recommendations in different neighborhoods: Old City, near Placa de Catalunya, near the Ramblas and in the Eixample neighborhood. I have never been there before and have no idea which area is the safest for a woman traveling alone. Normally,I sightsee during the day and am in my hotel by dark, but I understand that in Spain, people all come out in the evening, so I want to be comfortable coming and going after dark. Thank you for suggestions.

Of the four areas you are considering, I would think the Eixample neighborhood would be the quietest after dark. The other areas have a pretty lively nightlife. We stayed by the Ramblas and it was fairly noisy when we tried to get to sleep.

Thank you. I agree with you and booked a room in the Eixample area.
I appreciate all the help on this site.
