family of 4 looking for suggestions of where to rent a house/apartment. we love outings, hiking, beach, seeing some sites and are torn between being in town where we can buy food (spain's dinner hours don't work for us) and bike and loving quiet and rural, so suggestions for both appreciated. please say how many hours from barcelona if you know. we tend to keep away from regular tourist areas. thanks, sage

Sage, we rented an apartment in l'Escala, it was around 150km from Barcelona. It was cute, quiet, it had a market, shops, a very small beach and enough restaurants. We did day trip to Cadaques and Girona, and it is also very close to the ruins of Empuries. Hope this helps!

I second Martine's suggestion. L'Escala is one of my favorite places on the Costa Brava.
