I will be in Paris for 5 days and am looking in to renting an apartment.
I have done a lot of research as far as who to rent from, but what I am wondering is WHERE to rent?
I was originally looking at Rue Cler area but saw many people suggested being more centrally located.
I would really like to be near a farmer's market so I can shop there and would also prefer a quaint sort of neighborhood.
I would like your suggestions and why you chose that particular neighborhood?
Jesse - We rented from VacationinParis They have apartments all over Paris and the pricing isn't bad. They are also based in the US.
Rue Mouffetard.
It's just a tad southeast of the Sorbonne. Five minute walk to the Pantheon, ten or so to Notre Dame. Surrounded by metro stops. Produce markets and just about everything else in every block. Excellent grub all over the place at a price real people can afford.
One of the all-time great streets in the city. It's what Rue Cler and the Marais could be without all the tourists.
We're also renting an apartment in the Marais for a month. The reviews I read were stellar & my fingers are crossed. It's centrally located & we are renting directly from the owner, so no extra/hidden fees. We did some research & when renting through a 3rd party, there are all sorts of fees. The owner has several other apartments for rent, & all look good.
Also, given the volcano mess, we contacted the owner & he said that if we couldn't get there, he would not charge us, even though he has our deposit. I doubt an agency would do the same.
I'm here for a month in the 5th, right off Boulevard St. Germain and Rue des Ecoles -- absolutely perfect central location with a street market at least twice a week on Bl. St. Germain, near the Cluny. I'm two blocks from the Seine, 10 minutes from Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter -- very historical and friendly area. I rented through Escalea Apartments and couldn't be happier with them and this area. Good luck.
We rented an apartment on a very quiet street that ran between St. Sulpice and Luxembourg in the 6th. Marche St. Germain - an indoor market - was 2 blocks away. Rue de Buci - great outdoor/street market was a few more blocks near St. Germain. Great location. We just popped in (virtually next door) for Daniel Roth's organ concert on Sunday.
Rue Cler is very central, it is a very nice area between les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower, it is residential and high-end, with some museums in the area and good shopping in St Germain, good connection with buses. Personally, I'd certainly go for an apartment there.

We were able to rent through them in the Rue Cler area for June, but secured our apartment months ago.
I will report on how it works out after the visit. So far commnication and money transfer has been easy.
I would disagree that Rue Cler is central. It is nice, but not central. We stayed there for our first trip. When we went back and rented an apartment it was in the Latin Quarter, off of Rue Monge. That was much closer to walk to things and had more metro stops. There were produce markets, regular markets, and bakeries galore. I think if you are in the 4th, 5th or 6th you can't go wrong.

Here's a site that I rented from. Reasonable and came with good references. A good range of rental units.
I rent an apartment on Boulevard Grenelle. Close to Eiffel Tower, and located right in front of a metro station, and not far from the RER station. I love the location. And it's close to a park and the river.
There were supermarket and restaurant and bakery close by. It was perfect.
