We are doing a month long trip beginning and ending in Paris. (Yes, I know that sometimes it is better to go into one city and fly home from another, but this is best for us this time) We are going to see Paris for three days, then Versailles for a day and then on to Normandy and Mont. St. Michel... and on to many other destinations. My specific question is this. We do not want to rent the car until after we have finished seeing Paris. Should we rent one and go out to Versailles and onward or after Versailles?
And where?
Include Versailles in the Paris no-car portion. Rent the car at Gare du Nord when finally leaving Paris.
Cynthia - About 7 years ago my wife and I did almost the same trip as you are planning, though for only 2 weeks. I guess it depends on where you stay, but I would look for car rental agencies near your hotel in Paris. We stayed in the Rue Cler area in the 7th Arrondissement, and there were agencies within blocks of our hotel. We got a great price from Avis about 3 blocks away. I plotted out our exit plan from Paris, and after a short walk to Avis, we were out of Paris and on the highway to Normandy in 15 minutes. It's very easy to rent a car in downtown Paris and return it to the airport, with no drop charge. As for Versailles, I have no opinion, as we've not been there.
Versailles has a number of car rental places very close to both train stations. Spend your time there and pick up your car. Of course you can drop the car off near your airport on the way home. I would not bother picking up a car inside the Peraphique(excuse the spelling). I have had very good luck with Euro Car.
