I want to buy an ticket in advance for the Rijksmuseum. I see I can do that on their site, but where to you pick them up?
Look at the site again. We used credit card and printed our tickets-no need to pick up there. We were there recently and went early and it was not too crowded. The cafe there and the gift shop are excellent. We allowed about three hours in the museum.
Last time we were there, they were in a major rebuilding project. I believe it's since been completed. The paintings on display were just a shadow of what they had in storage.
The paintings documenting the 1600-1700 society in The Netherlands are just great.
Our first visit, few paintings had any glass or protection, and you could get literally inches away to see the brush strokes. Life is no more that simple.
Have a great trip.
Susan, thanks for that info. I'll have to look at the site again.
Be aware that during busy periods at the Rijks, the on-line ticket doesn't allow you to by-pass the long lines to get into the building. So it's essential to visit the museum right when it opens up so you can go right in.
We visited the Rijksmuseum in July of 2012. We walked right in.. maybe 10 people in front of us.. I think it might be more hassle then its worth to pre order tickets and pick them up. We went about lunch time .
"...We visited the Rijksmuseum in July of 2012. We walked right in..."
Back in 2012 the main building was still closed for renovation. Since the entire museum has completely reopened spring of this year, after it's ten year long renovation, crowds to visit have grown exponentially. During peak periods there are long lines in the park area just to get into the building. Once you get into the building after waiting in the park the line to but tickets can be another 30 minutes long, and the line for the coat check is just as long. Purchasing tickets via the website is a good move.
Wow.. I was lucky..
