Where to have home base for a week in Bavaria?

Six adults want to stay in one place for a week and travel out of there. Would like a house rather than apts and wanted suggestions on best town. Thinking of Fussen or Gzrmich and May or mid October.(which month) Also, want to see Salzburg and any place else anyone wants to recommend. Really want to enjoy a small area rather than trying to do it all. Thanks to all for any help

Garmisch would be a good choice, because as an established resort town, there's a huge stock of rental homes and apartments available.

I asked this question about five years ago, only I only had five days. Based on recommendations, I picked Mittenwald and really loved it. One thing to consider is transportation. We had a car so we had a lot of flexibility. If you will be travelling by train, you might want to pick a place that lets you train to the places you want to go easily. Also, I have no idea if there are houses to rent in Mittenwald. But I can tell you it is a beautiful and charming town.

I also stayed a week in Mittenwald 3 years ago and really liked the location. The town is charming and centrally located to travel to the Bavarian areas and into Austria and even Italy. We made a day trip to Salzburg with no difficulty. We also visited Bolzano in Italy along with the sites in Bavaria. We were there is early October and almost got snowed in due to an early snow storm.
We stayed in an apartment but it was in a small house with several apartments that might be appropriate for 6 adults. I found the apartment on the Alpenwelt Karwendel website. It has 3 other towns in the area and you can search vacation rentals. It is also extremely affordable to rent apartments in Germany compared to other European countries.

Hi, We also love Mittenwald. Stayed here in April '05 and October '06. Visited again in Dec. '10. It's close to Garmisch (20 min), Innsbruck (45 min) and close enough to Fuessen (Neuschwanstein, etc.), Linderhof, Ettal, and even Italy and the Dolomites, which are about an hour or so from Innsbruck. That said, the Berchtesgaden area is another good place to base. We stayed in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden in Oct. '06, Oct. '07 and Sept. '09. We also stayed right in the area in Schonau am Konigsee in Nov. '10. Close by are Berchtesgaden, Konigsee, Eagle's Nest, Salt Mines, plus Salzburg is close by (30 min), the Salzkammergut (lakes region) is under 1:30 away as is Zell am See and then "Mad" King Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee palace is about an hour away. We prefer October to visit these area's. We've traveled once in late April/early May, once in late Sept., once in late Nov. and 4 times in mid to late October. Our opinion, October is the winner. Hope this helps. Paul
