If you had 2 days to stop over somewhere between either Milan and Paris or Paris and Frankfurt, where would you go? Factor in that this will be December/January. Also, we are traveling by train.

If you take the new TGV service from Paris to Strasbourg you could visit the Black Forrest for two days, which is most romantic in winter. You could stay over at Baden-Baden, Freiburg or one of the small villages up the mountains. From there back to Frankfurt it's a less than 2 hours train ride.

If you visit Freiburg -- must see the Munster Cathedral in the town square -- eat at the WineTraub-
pumpkin soup is great and see the large clock by the University.
