Where to go in Southern France?

My husband and I have 3 days to play around in Southern France (this is where everyone is telling us to go)in early October '12. We are coming from London and we'll be going to Naples (all by flying). Anyhow, where should we spend our time? Lots of people have said Nice - looks good to me, but I want more suggestions before mark it solid on the itinerary. Thanks!

Kristina , Nice and the surrounding area are lovely and quite diverse. We were there last fall and for us one place is a particular standout : Villefranche sur mer . Very charming little place . Lovely seaside promenade from the Port de la D'arse to the old town . As well you can walk ( or taxi ) to cap ferrat , once home to Somerset Maugham , and visit the villa and gardens of Ephrussi de Rothschild . Nice makes a good base and Villefranche , Monaco , and other spots are a short train ride from there . Happy travels !!

I really enjoyed Aix-en-Provence, Marsielle, and Cassis, and they are all very close together but very different. But they may not be for everyone, particularly Marsielle, which is a bit "gritty" but also warm and wonderful.

All things considered, Nice may be the best choice. As other posters have noted, there are quite a few locales along the coast which can be easily reached by either rental car or train/bus from NIce. Given the short duration AND the fact that you are flying to Naples, Provence becomes less attractive.

We just came back from a trip to VilleFranche. We have also been to Canne, visited Nice, Monaco and antibes. I personally liked VilleFranche the best. It was easy to get around, the people were friendly and the Hotel Welcome was very nice and in the best location possible. I would stay there again and take the train to visit other areas. I prefer an easygoing enviroment and I think that was why VilleFranche appealed so much to me. Have a great trip!
