I will be in Interlaken for 6 days in mid August. I will be staying another 4 days before I fly out of Zurich. I am a 54 yr old male travelling alone. Where should I spend my 4 days? Maybe 2 nights in one hotel and 2 in another, or maybe it's easier to stay in 1 spot. Flight out of Zurich is about 1:00 pm. Any advice is appreciated !
Such an opportunity to see Lauterbrunnen Valley about 20 min from Interlaken. If it is clear you could even go up the Jungfrau. Ck out this valley is RS guidebk it is one of the most beautiful places!!!! I stay in Muerren while there.
JS is right, don't stay in Interlaken, stay in the mountains or the valley. But I guess you are asking where to go after that? May I ask where you will be coming FROM? You have 4 days to spend, lucky you, but who says you must use them at the end of your trip?
Hi Steve, I'd suggest staying in Lucerne for 2 or 3 nights. Not sure 4 nights is necessary. You could also stay in Lucerne on your last night in Switzerland, as your flight is at 1pm and it will only take about an hour or so to get to the airport. Not that it has anything to do with your question, but I have to agree with others... if possible, stay IN the Berner Oberland (Wengen, Muerren, Lauterbrunnen, etc.) instead of Interlaken. Just an opinion. Paul
I will be at Victoria Jungfrau Hotel on a company sponsored trip, so I don't have a choice in where to stay for the first 6 days, After that; I'm on my own! There will be some day trips available while in Interlaken. One is to Schilthorn(sp). Another to Bern. I just need to figure out where to go after Interlaken. Thanks for all the great advice!!
Hi Steve, This may sound crazy, but maybe stay 2 nights IN the BO in Wengen or Muerren and then 2 nights in Lucerne, including your last night in Switzerland. Paul
I would travel to a nearby, but different, part of Switzerland for 2 nights, then back to Luzern for the last 2 nights as Paul suggests. You might consider Kandersteg, a pretty alpine village just over an hour away from Interlaken, but with very different scenery. Walk through town and ride the gondola up to Oeschinensee, a gorgeous high alpine lake surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls. An overnight stay at the mountain hotel up there is a real treat. We include a night or 3 there on every trip to Switzerland. There are nice places to stay in the town as well, if you prefer not to be so isolated. Have a look at the photos: www.oeschinensee.ch
I think I like the idea of sending the last 2 nights in Lucerne. Still not sure where to go the first 2, though. Kandersteg looks great, but perhaps Montreux area for a different Switzerland from Interlaken. What are your thoughts on that? may get to see a bit more then on the train trip.
It depends on what you like. Montreux is a city on a lake, in that respect like Luzern. But otherwise very different, as it is in the French- speaking area and the architecture and feel are very different. You can visit Chateau de Chillon from there; this is a favorite castle of ours and well worth a visit. On the way to Montreux from Interlaken you will have a scenic train journey. Visitin g tis area would give you a broader perspective of the different regions and languages of Switzerland. Personally, I prefer smaller villages in the mountain regions ( like Kandersteg) as we are more interested in scenery and hiking than cities. But everyone is different and you should choose based on your own preferences.
If you have a car, you may want to consider the scenic drive over the Grimsel Pass and into the Rhone Valley. From there, you could visit Zermatt, which to me, is worth it for the view of the Matterhorn alone. I've never had a chance to visit, but the town of Sion (in the Rhone Valley) always looks interesting from the road as I've driven by.
One can easily get to Zermatt by train, but not by car. You have to leave your car someplace else and take the train the last part. For a person traveling alone the train is more cost-effective anyway.
If you are stuck for the first 6 days in Interlaken and cannot get up to the Lauterbrunnen area, I would head for Lauterbrunnen, Murren, or Wengen for at three days and then head for Zurich. Much as I love Lucerne, the Lauterburnnen area is by far the number one attraction in Switzerland and, as I recall, although you are very close, you cannot even see it from Interlaken. If you do have quite a bit of free time during the 6 days, then by all means head for Lucerne afterward.
You're working for the right company. The Victoria Jungfrau is the best hotel in the area. I'd take advantage of being there in August, when you'll have long days. Every evening after your meetings, go and explore the Lauterbrunen Valley. Take the trams into the mountains and explore. It's our favorite place in Switzerland. One day, you can rent a car and go to Lake Geneva: explore Montrreux and nearby Chateau Chillon, Lausanne and end up in Geneva for a great dinner by the lake at sunset. I second going to Lucerne for a few days afterwards. Enjoy.

Thanks for all the advice! I haven't been on here lately, but I appreciate everyones input. I will be exploring from Interlaken. Shilthorn, Guyere, Bern, are all optional side trips. I will have a couple of days i can explore on my own. Don't want to move around from hotel to hotel too much. Looking at the last 2 nights in Lucerne. My flight leaves from Zurich at 1:00 pm, should be able to make it to the airport from Lucerne. So many options, I may wait until I get there to decide about the first 2 days. Would like to take some scenic train or bus rides along the way. Been leaning toward mountain village for 2 days then on to Lucerne. Let you know what happens, although still open to suggestions! Thanks!
