My Husband and I will be taking a trip to Benelux this summer (late August) and I was wondering where we should base ourselves in the Ardennes. We're going to be there for 2 weeks. We're probably going to stay in Amsterdam for a few days and then base in Brugge after that to see western Belgium. I'm looking for something preferably on the train line (perhaps with access to a rental car, if we decide to drive around the countryside). Thanks!
I would recommend a rental car. What public transportation infrastructure exists in the Ardennes is geared more towards commuters going to and from the cities, much less for point-to-point transportation. Namur and Liege are the only real transit hubs in the area. I wouldn't particularly want to stay in either city, but if I had to pick, I would choose Namur. With a car, however, my choice would be Dinant or Durbuy. "We're probably going to stay in Amsterdam for a few days and then base in Brugge after that to see western Belgium." Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your intentions, but you realize, of course, that the Ardennes region is in SE Belgium? There is a region called the "Flemish Ardennes" in the province of East Flanders, but it consists of little more than some small hills in an otherwise flat landscape.
Yes, I realize. I'm just looking for the NEXT stop, after Brugge on our itinerary!
I also recommend Dinant. Very picturesque town. I also liked La Roche. There is even museum of battle of the Bulge there.
