Northern Bavaria has got a lot to offer, including Nuremberg and Bamberg - and probably the best beers in the world, a new website explains (in English): www.franken-bierland.de/en/
Andreas, "and probably the best beers in the world" The Belgians might argue that point.
As to having the best beers in the world, the Czechs, the Dutch, and, as you say, the Belgians may claim that distinction. That doesn't mean I agree with any one of them...quite the contrary.
I might be missing something, but I can't find the name of a single brand name on that website. If the beers are so good, I might like to see if my local getränkemarkt carries any of them... although probably not, it seems that other than Paulaner, it's hard finding anything brewed further than 2 hours away.
Tom writes, "I can't find the name of a single brand name on that website." Numerous breweries are listed under "Beer Tours" pages - like the ones along the Aischgründer Bierstraße: http://www.franken-bierland.de/en/biertouren/aischgruender_bierstrasse/
Ah, thanks.
Tucher wouldn't be my first choice & neither would that crap Bitburger, but both have worked in a pinch. Still, my favorites are Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse, and König Ludwig Weissbier. It's hard to beat these three. I just thought of another great beer, but I've only enjoyed it once or twice: Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier
The Dutch brew La Trappe... and the rest is pretty forgettable. James makes an all-too-true observation. My local getränkmarkt is filled with Eichbaum, Schmucker, Pfungstäder (all of which are decent breweries), and a few others... but almost nothing from Bavaria except Paulaner, and nothing at all from northern Germany. Forget about anything from Belgium, unless you're married to a Belgian... wait, I am...
OK. The best beer is czech. It even gave names to other beers. For example beer from Plzen (Pilsner Urquell). The German name is Pilsen. Beer from Ceske Budejovice (in German Budweis). The beer is Budweiser. Much better than the one from St.Louis. One of the best hops in the world is from Zatec (German name Saaz). The best beer at all is Bernard from microbrewery in Humpolec. IMHO.
I'm an Ale guy. After much research I declare England beer heaven.
Yes, I have heard that claim made by Dutch partisans of their beer. Certainly that's NOT my opinion. I'll take Tucher over Dutch, Czech, and Belgian beers anytime.
