Where on the Mosel w/a car

We are staying 4 nights on the Mosel this October. We will have a car. We want to visit Burg Eltz, Trier, Marksburg Castle and possibly Bacharach and/or St. Goar. We are trying to decide between staying 4 nights in Bernkastel-Kues and Valwig (Cochem). Any advice or suggestions? Thank's in advance.

Paul, I would stay in Cochem. It is a beautiful little town.

posted on your other question, but just incase - id concur with Cochem is the best to use as a base - right on the train and river. Bernkastel is a beautiful town and well worth a trip to visit, but not as easy to get to as it takes a train to a nearby station, then 15-20 min bus ride, then walk across the bridge and youre there. Go for the day but without a car - stay in Cochem for ease of proximity to everything else!

I would stay 2 nights in Bacharch and use the day to boat the Rhine. Then drive to Cochem visiting Burg Elz on the way. Then spend the other night in Trier. We stayed at Letties in Bacharch and id suggest her place.

While Cochem is a pretty city, it's very busy. If you will have a car, you don't need to worry about using the trains and buses. We will be staying in Bernkastel-Kues on 13-15 Sept. In May 2005, we stayed in Beilstein, which is on a beautiful part of the Mosel. However, it's a very small town and there's not much nightlife. So, if that's important to you, then you may want to stay in a larger, busier town like Cochem.

Thank you for the responses.
We'll arrive very early am. in Frankfurt (mid October) and plan to drive (we rented a car) to either Bernkastel-Kues or Valwig (Cochem) to use as a base for practically 4 full days and 4 nights. From here we plan on staying in Rothenberg a couple of nights and then on to Ramsau (Berchtesgaden) before we leave from Munich. I guess it seems Valwig (Cochem) would be more central, except to Trier maybe? We plan on spending the better part of 1 day there. Thanks again everyone.
