I've never been to the Black Forest but would really like to go. Is it known to have nice colors in the autumn? I thought the forest was mostly evergreens so I figured there wouldn't be much seasonal change.

It is full of evergreens when we were there in summer. you might check with tourist bureau for select scenic drives.

Some of the Black Forest is covered in evergreens and much of it is open pasture land in beautiful, rolling countryside. In the open areas there are hardwoods. I love the scenery in Germany in all seasons but could find few fall colors to compare with Aspens in Colorado (and here in Utah) or the hardwoods in my native state of Michigan. Still, fall is a beautiful, refreshing time in the Black Forest. I think you will be pleased.

Regards, Gary

I have a similar question but on the other side of Germany. My parents will be in the Black forest Sept 14-20 (so they would be interested in that info) but my boyfriend and I will be in the Bavarian forest from Sept 5-23. Do the leaves change color there? Have a fabulous time Brian, Prost!

The leaves change colors the same time as they do in the temperate regions of the US. Mainly in October. The higher you go , the more pine trees. So if you are traveling through the Odenwald or anywhere in the Rhine Main area, the Harz, anyplace in Bavaria and well anywhere in Germany where you are not a high elevation, it is quite pretty, with lovely colors.

I come from Ohio and the tree colors are certainly as pretty here as it is there during the autumn.

September is too early. Most hardwood forests start to change sometime from mid to late October.

Leaves are starting to change in early September. The peak will be in late September. Due to the long and hot summer this year I've actually seen some trees beginning to change these days...

We saw some nice color around Neuschwanstein in early to mid October. It was probably past it's peak. I didn't think too much about it while there. When I look at my pictures now, I'm surprised how much color there was.
