What to see in/around Paderborn, Germany?

I will be traveling to Paderborn, Germany from Phoenix, Arizona in the first week of October. Apart from a catherdral I read about, what is there to see in Paderborn? Are there things that I could see near by doing day trips? Thanks, Srini

A few years back I had a nice time at the Detmold Open Air Museum (http://www.lwl.org/LWL/Kultur/LWL-Freilichtmuseum-Detmold/). (We drove there, so I don't know anything about getting there by public transport if you need to do so.) There's also the large Hermannsdenkmal monument commemorating the Roman's defeat in the Teutoburg forest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermannsdenkmal) nearby. There's also the Teutoburg Forest national parks.

If you have a car, there´s a driving loop recommended through Hameln, Hildesheim, Einbeck, Northeim, Göttingen and Hann Münden. There´s also apparently a schloss (Neuhaus) to the north of the town. This isn´t a region many Americans are familiar with, so you may have to dig to get some more information.

I second the suggestion on seeing the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold...saw that in 1984, it is worth seeing. Hamelin was also interesting as a day trip, only went there once in 2007, saw the famous Fachwerkhaeuser (half timbered houses). If you have a car and are interested in Prussian history, go to Minden for the museum there, definitely a historical site. Paderborn is also an university town, if you're interested in comparing various German university towns.

Rudy, Paul, Tom, Fred, Thanks a lot. I will look into your tips. It seems I will easily have enough to keep me busy for the ~2 days I will have! Srini
