We are taking the AVE from Madrid to Seville and want to stop in Cordoba on the way to see the Mezquita. However, you can no longer leave luggage in the train or bus station. What do you recommend that we do with it - find a hotel that will hold it for us? Can we check it at the Mezquita entrance?
I don't know the answer, but I'm planning to do the same thing, stopping in Cordoba as a day trip on the way between Madrid and Seville (although we'll be going in the other direction). So if anybody knows, I'm interested, too!
That's too bad...when did they close off the bus station lockers? They were there this past spring. I don't recall seeing any areas to check things at the Mezquita itself.
I don't know but this site's guidebook updates say that they have been closed (I'm assuming for security reasons). I really am at a loss for what to do with it - leave someone in the party outside of the Mezquita with it and take turns going in? It really stinks!
I just wondered if anyone had any experience getting a hotel to hold it there. There has to be something to do with it since I'm sure tons of people make the stop on the AVE.
When I have faced that problem in the past I always find someone nearby to ask about leaving luggage. Often there is a Tourist Information Office or a counter where someone will know. Just keep asking until you find someone.
The last time I found a hotel where I checked my bags for a couple of dollars. You might even find a merchant who will keep your bags in his office for a small fee.
It may be risky, but it may be necessary if all other means fail.
A long time ago we attended a conference in Cordoba and it was held in a beautiful municipal conference centre right across from the entrance to the Mezquita. I am just wondering if, rather than leaving a member of your party outside with the luggage, maybe if you asked nicely you could leave it with someone in the centre.
Worth a try.
Are you sure you can't store luggage at the train station? Where did you get that information? In Rick's new Spain 2008 book he says you can store it at the train station, just not at the bus station.
Well, if you look on the Guidebook Updates section of this website for the Spain book, the first entry says this:
Updates since the 2008 edition:
For security reasons, the government has ordered the Spanish train system (RENFE) to shut down luggage lockers at all its train stations.
Then, further down the page, under Cordoba, it says this:
Due to security concerns, the train and bus stations no longer accommodate left luggage.
So, if the book says you can't do it at the bus stations....and the website says you can't do it at the train station...
I'm wondering about this too since I'm planing a 1/2 day stopover in Cordoba on the way from Seville to Madrid.
sorry I did not notice the update to the 2008 guidebook. I was planning the same stopover. Instead, I think I will go directly to Sevilla from Madrid, and make a day trip to Cordoba the next day. That way I will just eliminate the luggage issue. Maybe you could do the same.
Mmm...I hate backtracking. I think that I'll try to find a place that will watch our bags for a few hours. I'm guessing that there will be some friendly hotel willing to make a few easy euros for holding our bags een though we won't be staying there.
But if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
