We'll be spending two nights and one full day in Lourdes. Neither of us are particularly religious and I doubt we will be spending the whole time at the shrine. Is there anything else to see or do in Lourdes or the immediate area? We will not have a car.
A funicular railway goes up the mountains that fringe the town, and I think it goes to the top of the Pic du Jer for a good view. And caves to explore near the summit. See www.picdujer.info
Most people posting here, who go to Lourdes, see, to do so for mainly religious reasons. We can probably give more useful feedback if you can tell us something about your reasons and objectives for being in Lourdes for two nights?
Thank you for the link. I had seen that. Other than to observe the phenomenom of what people's faith can cause to happen, and to share the experience with my wife who does have a bit of religion in her, I have no other reason to be there. I did Google 'Lourdes Sights' and other than the shrine, there is a castle and museum that sound interesting worth an hour's visit, per one site. Has anyone visited the castle/museum or any other non religious and memorable sites around Lourdes?
Be prepared everything is religious in Lourdes. Perhaps you could shorten your stay.
Thank you all for your ideas. The more I've been researching this, the more stuff I'm finding to explore, bot religious and non religious. Kent, that funicular trip looks quite spectacular. The foothills of the ancient Pyrenees do indeed look beautiful. Maybe it's like the saying..."when in Rome, do...." I'm thinking don't fight all the religious stuff, but join in and see what it is all about, learn as much as possible.
