Hi all, Anyone care to share their opinions and stories about particular street markets in Paris? I will be staying in Montmartre in July by the Barbes and Anvers markets, so specific impressions of those would be particularly helpful, but all ideas are appreciated. Thank you!
I can't say I know all the markets, but I loved the Marche des Enfants Rouges in the Marais. Look for the man who sells crêpes - a quintessential French experience. He told me his were "the best in the universe". Two Japanese ladies asked him for a crêpe with Nutella and banana and he refused, saying that was terrible and he wouldn't do it. They got plain bananas instead. He proceeded to make my vegetarian crêpe from scratch - lettuce, avocado - then he julienned some carrots, added goat cheese, squeezed lemon juice into it, scraped lemon zest, and finally drizzled honey on top. As he was sprinkling on fresh herbs as a final touch, I said "C'est assez." He responded, "Non, c'est moi qui decide!" ... It's I who decides! Spoken like a true Frenchman, and it was by far the best crêpe I've ever had!
Venerable, always interesting. Weekends only. Marche aux Puces de la Porte de Vanves. I also loved Marche aux Livres because it's all about books. Again Saturday and Sunday, Sq. Georges Brassens. For food I enjoyed the Mouffetard Market in the 5th. Believe it's daily but might be closed one day. Hard to remember. What I do recall is that it's in an old neighborhood, wasn't trendy, (as of 7 yrs ago), and had wonderful stalls of fruit, vegetables, breads and cheeses! Loaded up and took back to the apartment. Tres Bon!
Saturday morning at Cours de Vincennes near Place de la Nation. Best in the city in my opinion.
