I am wanting to check pricing and schedules to get from Florence, Italy to Provence (staying in Oppede-le-Vieux). I am familiar with the Trenitalia website, but will be traveling from Italy to France and need advice on how best to do this. Also, considering my final destination, what city in Provence should I make as my terminus so as to best be able to rent and return a car.
France's train system is www.sncf.com.
or www.tgv.com.
So, where do I jump off of the Trenitalia train and onto the French train?
French tgv's are operated by sncf, there's no need to mess with the tgv site since it's covered by sncf.fr. Where you change depends on the origination and destination cities. What are they?
See Above.
You can easily see the entire run from Florence to Nice Ville train station in France on www.trenitalia.com. It's an 7.5hr-8.5hr journey depending on the run you . Expect at least 3 train changes. The last train change that I see on all runs out of Italy is at Ventimiglia, Italy. The last train will take you into France. I'm just not sure if this last train is an Italian train to Nice Ville or a French train. You can also see runs deeper into France than just Nice Ville. I'm looking at a run to Nimes via Avignon as I write this post.
If you want to take the train as close as possible to Oppede-le-Vieux, then I suggest that you pick up your car at the Aix-en-Provence TGV station. If you want to see a bit more of the Cote d'Azur and Provence out the window of your car, then pick it up at the Nice Ville train station. For detailed timetables from Florence all the way to either Nice or Aix-en-Provence, use the German Rail site.
