We are a party of seven and both rail and air are so expensive - even with 2nd class tickets on the train.
Are there inexpensive options besides hitchiking with the kids??
Thanks.

Flying is generally much cheaper then training, what dates and airlines have you looked at??
I guess with a group of 7 everything adds up,, could just leave a few people at home, lol ( just kidding)
Don't think I haven't considered leaving some at home, but they are so cute!
Regarding air, I have checked Ryanair and EasyJet. It just adds up. Maybe I am not being clever enough, but I keep coming up with about $800-900 to do this RT with the seven!
I am researching the car rental right now.
Is it daunting to drive in France? I am a former New Yorker living in Miami (two crazy-driving towns) so I think that I am up to it, but am a little concerend.
Thoughts? Thanks.
How do those options compare with renting a large vehicle and driving?
You could do it in a (long) day, though there are lots of wonderful places to stop at in between.
Other than that, your best money-saving tip is probably to rejigger your itinerary to eliminate the round trip. E.g., if your plan is to fly home after Paris, fly home from Nice instead. If you are traveling to Paris from Italy, stop off in Nice along the way. Etc.
