We are at Meersburg (Germany) and would like to go to Switzerland for the day....any suggestions on quaint, active towns?
From Meersburg take the ferry to Konstanz, drive along the shore (view from Switzerland to Germany: boring. View from German side to Switzerland: Breathtaking, therefore consider driving down German coast to Friedrichshafen to take the ferry to Romanshorn from there. But that boat ride is twice the price of the Meersburg-Konstanz one. You'd only need a one-way ticket on that one though as your evening return will be using the cheaper one by Konstanz). Then visit St. Gallen and from there drive to Trogen (a swiss Alpine village that looks like it had just been discovered by the outside world. Very small though) and from there via Heiden back to the lakefront. In the St. Magarethen area consider crossing the border into Austria to fill up the car as gas is cheaper in Austria than it is in Switzerland and Germany.
