What is a "double" room?

I always have trouble with this. In Europe (Paris, to be specific) what is a double room? I want one bed for my husband and I and the last time I booked for us we ended up with two single beds. How do I ask for one bed for both of us?

Thank you in advance! :)

You ask for one double bed. A double is any room that 2 people can sleep in. We've had double beds and 2 twin beds, some which we could move together, some which were built into the walls on opposite sides of the room.

Agreed that a "double" means that two people can sleep in the room with different bed scenarios (incidentally, it means the same in the states since I have had the option of choosing between two queen/twin beds or one king bed when booking a "double" room).

I think your best option would be to contact the hotel directly and clarify what you are looking for. Just state, "Bonjour, parlez-vous Englais?" and they almost always respond with a "Yes, a little", which is enough to discuss your needs.

Technically...a "double" is a room with one bed big enough for two. A "twin" is a room for two with two single beds.

That said, each hotel does it's own thing if you don't specify. Always ask for a double room with one bed if that's what you want.

BTW...a "double" bed in Europe is usually the size of our "full" bed...not a queen.
