What important tips would you give to others?

I'm asking this because I'm running into a little problem, finding a hotel in Rudesheim on the night of a Rhine A Flame cruise. I thought 4 months was early enough to start looking, but I was wrong. Everyone is booked or requires more than one night stay.

I'm now looking at a nearby town. I don't want to go too far away because of the late hour the cruise ends.

So, my tip: book very early if there is some festival/event of any kind in the area, probably more than 8 or 9 months if possible.

How are you searching for a hotel? Are you using www.hrs.com or just Trip Advisor or some other search engine? Sometimes, just Googling B&B or pension or hotel for that city or town will bring surprising results. If you have not tried HRS, please give it a go.

I've not tried that site but will, thanks. I've been googleing hotels, using tripadvisor and some other travel hotel booking sites. They all come up with the same hotels over and over.

I've e-mailed one in a nearby town, probably won't get a reply until at least tomorrow.

Kathleen, did you try checking hotel.de and plugging in Rudesheim? I came up with 21 hotels. Maybe there's one with a vacancy. Unfortunately, I don't know your dates....If the cruise ends in Rudesheim, how will you be getting to a nearby town?

Brianna, we will have a rental car, so that's no problem. I really didn't want to have to drive far. I'm waiting on an e-mail from a hotel in Assmannshausen.

I used hotel.de too to help me find hotels in Europe. I find the site quite helpful, it is definitely bring up more results than expedia which I used to use a few yrs ago, and the price is better too.

I don't know if this will help or not- I ran into similar problems when trying to find a place to stay in Avignon during the theater festival. Nothing, nothing, nothing in my price range or else losing time waiting to hear back and this was nine months in advance! Finally, I lucked onto a package in some remote corner of the Internet- so this is my suggestion. Try some tour companies because, even if you don't use all the vouchers they "give" you, it might be a solution (they could have some blocks of rooms where you want to be). Good luck!

IMHO, happy, successful traveling requires the traveler to be flexible and open-minded. These two characteristics can get you through a lot of situations that might severely limit someone who is very rigid in their plans/expectations.
