What hotels to stay in Amsterdam

We are planning to stay in Amsterdam 4-5 night and do day trips from there. Where do you recommend staying? We don't have kids enjoy walking neighborhoods.

I stayed at the Hotel Brouwer this summer and enjoyed my room. http://www.hotelbrouwer.nl/ The location was good--on a canal near the train station. It's an old canal house with a very small elevator. The breakfast was okay, but nothing spectacular. The manager was an American woman who was helpful. They had WIFI. My room looked right out onto the canal and I watched the tail end of the World Cup parade from my window despite the fact that the parade itself did not go on the Singel. Pam

We really enjoyed the t'Hotel on the Leliegracht canal. It's a block or two from the Anne Frank house. This is pretty much considered the Jordaan area and good for walking through lovely neighborhoods.

The Hotel Fita is wonderful unless you smoke. They have a great breakfast buffet and will do laundry. Also free calls to the US. Absolutely no smoking.. Close to Vondel Park.

stayed at the convent hotel this past week for one night. awesome. 10 minute walk from the train station (for day trips), directly in front of a tram stop (for everything else) and, if this matters to you, next door is a fantastic pastry shop and two doors down is the grasshopper coffee shop (those two things go together, ok?) the bed was like sleeping in a marshmellow, and the staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. the entire building is also non-smoking, and has a nice bar with big velvet chairs. we spent less than $100 USD--actually I think it was around $70 on expedia.

In addition to hotels, you might consider staying in a houseboat. That's an experience unique to Amsterdam, and there are lots of houseboats listed at http://www.houseboathotel.nl/ . I would recommend BK 18, if it is available.

I stayed on a nice, non-Rick listing in the SW corner of AMS, near the Tropen Museum. It was a bit out of the way but trams made it easy to get to the sites. I had the big garden view room with a view of a windmill. It had its own kitchen and the hostess kept the fridge full of breakfast items. I had the best apple juice I have ever had! It is BB IJ. Check out the website.

Gayle, here are two hotels I can recommend.

Hampshire Inn Prinsergracht: Right on the canal in the Southern Canal zone. Close to everything but far away from the noisy part of Amsterdam. Trams 16, 24, 25 about 2 minutes away. Tram goes to Centraal Station. Museums, Albert Culpmarket, Leidseplein are a 10-15 minute walk. Great staff and an elevator too.

You can also try Hotel Alexander:

2 minute walk to Leidseplein, Trams 1, 2, 5 stop at Leidseplein. Museums are 5 minutes away, Jordaan is close-by as well as Vondel Park. It has an elevator too.

I stayed twice at the Quentin Arrive Hotel on Haarlemmerstraat, just a 5-minute walk from the train station in the Jordaan district and liked it very much. But in the past 2 years they only allow bookings of at least 3 nights, so I couldn't stay with them on my most recent, 2-night visit. For this visit I stayed at a Rick Steves-recommended hotel, Frederic's, also in the Jordaan. They are budget hotels with no frills (a shared bathroom, for example), but if that doesn't bother you then I recommend either one. A 2-person room costs about the same in each: 60-70 euros per night.

We did priceline and got a 4* hotel at the harbor - Moevenpick Hotel for 80.00 per night. Wonderful room.

We enjoyed our stay at Boogaard's B&B. Well located, quiet, safe street, nice guy, great breakfasts. I found him on tripadvisor, and will return from now on.
