I will have about 10 days for Paris. I really want to explore the city and suburbs by way of bike like the Bellville and Menilmontant area. I do want to get a feel for the city and not just devote my time to Museums. However, I was thinking of taking the train to Dinan in the morning and coming back the next night. Dose that sound realistic? It is about a 3 hour train ride. I leave for France June 23 and would like to book a place before I left if I do decide to go to Dinian. Is 10 days enough to get a feel for Paris? thanks
hmm. Dinan is a nice town--a good mix of interesting to tourists but not too "touristy". But I'm not sure I'd go all the way there just to see the town (we had a car and so also explored the coast and other towns in Brittany).
Ten days is great for the kind of Paris trip you're describing. Dinan is an interesting smaller town and if you spend one night there, that's plenty of time to see the sights. I'm curious why you chose that specific destination because of all the places you could go by train for an overnight visit, that probably wouldn't be my first choice.
I'm guessing a family connection? Otherwise yes, it does seem odd!
Well I will be in Europe 35 days. I will be in Paris 5 days which includes a bike trip to Versille. and then 6 days in Belguim exploring WW1 sites my grandfather fought at. Back to Paris for 3. Then down to Provence for about 9 days biking around the are of Arles. 3 day in Nice and then 1 to Marselle.
I end in Paris for the period of june 21 to 26. I was going to do a day trip to Chartes. Now I was thinking of Dinan. I like the way RS describes Dinan in his book. But It is a 3 hour train ride so I was going to stay over night and come back the nest day to relax in Paris for the last 3. My though is maybe just stay in Paris instead to really get a feel for the suburbs etc.
We went to Dinan last summer, booking a hotel for two nights and planning to spend the full day in Dinan. It's a nice little town but you can see the main sights in two or three hours. We spent most of the next day driving to St. Malo (which was a lot more interesting than Dinan) and visiting Mt. St. Michel in the late afternoon. The main event in Dinan is walking around the central area and down Rue Jezebel. Canterbory restaurant was enjoyable. Without a car, a full day in Dinan is probably a bit long unless you like to just sit and soak up touristy atmosphere.
You mention that you had considered Chartres. If you like stained glass, you really need to see the catherdral in Chartres. The story of how the glass was saved during WWII is inspiring. Chartres is about an hour by train if that much. We were awe struck. That and St. Chapelle in Paris have the most beautiful stained glass I've ever seen.
I am also consider instead going to Bayeux to see the Candain war sites
I need to book with Battlebus tours but they don't have other Canadians booked as yet For July 7th the day I was thinking of going. They need at leas 2 people to run the tour.
I might keep in touch with them on my free days while in Paris.
thanks
We were in Dinan last month. This is really a nice little town, but if you are going for only one night, I would not bother. As other posters have suggested. It is much better to spend a few days in Brittany itself with a car, which is what we did.
I don't know Dinan, so I can't make a comparison. However, we did love Chartres. The cathedral is magnificent. And, the town is also lovely. We spent quite a bit of time walking through the commercial area as well as the residential. When we were walking around the canal area of Bruges last month, we talked about how it reminded us of Chartres.
