What can I do in between Basel Switzerland and Milan Iitaly?

Hi
I am finishing a bike tour that ends in Basel and was planning on going to Milan as I have to catch another bike tour in Lake Garda. I will have about 4 days free. I was thinking of being in Milan for 3 days. Is that too much? is there much to do in and around this city? What about Basel or on the way to Milan. Is there anything you recomend along the way? Thanks

Stew, There are lots of choices. Where to begin???? To begin with, I wouldn't suggest Milan for three days as there are more interesting choices. What type of sights are you most interested in? Some suggestions you might consider: > Spend a few days in the Berner-Oberland prior to going to Milan. > Spend a few days in Stresa, including a day trip on the scenic Cento Valli Railway to Locarno (Switzerland), returning by boat (it will be a FULL day trip). > Spend a few days in Lugano. > Spend a few days on beautiful Lago di Como (Varenna), with day trips to the famous resort of Bellagio (or other points along the lake). You can reach Varenna either via rail through Milan, or rail to Como and then take a Ferry or Hydrofoil. Return to Milan for your next bike tour at the end of the trip will be an easy 1H:03M. As you didn't specify which locations you've been to previously, these are only a general idea. Happy travels!

Thanks Ken for the info. I should have stated that I have been in Berner-Oberland a few years ago...very beautiful. i was considering Milan as a home base. Is that a good idea? You siad I can do Lago di Como (Varenna from Milan? Are ther very good places to stay in Varenna? can I get to Lugano on the way from Basel?
Is there 2 Lugano's, one in italy and one in Switzerland? My Bike tour at Lake Garda are 100km to 150km a day bike trips from a hotel that I will be staying at. I will be doing that for 8 days. so I will get to see much of that area.
