What is the best route to take from Bordeaux? And where is the best place to stay if I want to see the cave paintings. Sarlat I here is busy, especially with a car... so Beynac? Or in Periguex as it's halfway back to Bordeaux?

Salart is great with shops and restaurants. parking is not too bad if you arrive a little early. the region is not that big so you can easily drive to anywhere from salart and return on the same day. from Bordeaux to salart there is the highway, and there is a back country road. I liked the country road although might be slower than highway, you can pass through a lot of little villages and vineyards very beautiful.
