We will be traveling to Portugal this summer and are looking for a less touristy than the Algarve option to spend some time one the beach. Anything to recommend 1-2 hrs north or south of Lisbon?
3 teenagers, so a little action like water sports would be a plus.

You might look around Nazare. Nazare is a bit touristy but there are a bunch of little beach communities all around it where you can get cheap rentals on the beach. We got a big house in Pedra d'Ouro, just north of Nazare a few years really cheap - 1000 euro for two weeks, it had 3 or 4 bedrooms, fully furnished kitchen, washer dryer, etc. It was also on a huge beach that was almost completely empty everyday we were there. There's not much in the way of water sports but there are plenty of water sports (and beach sports) in Nazare which is a short drive away and not quite as touristy as the Algarve.
