We are going to Switzerland in September and
wonder which is the more scenic village to stay in. Also easier for trips to the Schilthorn and Jungfrau.
I've only been to Murren, but my understanding is that Murren is the smaller and more scenic. We had a gorgeous view of the Eiger from our hotel window.
Murren is by far the easiest for access to Schilthorn - you can hike or take the cable car up from from Murren. I think Wengen is closer to the Jungfrau. If you don't have time for both, my suggestion would be to do the Schilthorn - more scenic route, faster to get there and much cheaper.
Have fun!
Kate
Thanks Kate. What hotel did you stay at?
Murren sits at a higher elevation than Wengen, so the views of the surrounding mountains (particularly the Jungfrau) are a little better. Wengen gives you a better view of the valley.
Both are beautiful and scenic. Muerren is a bit smaller than Wengen and most typical of a genuine Swiss Alpine village. No tourist cars in either village. Muerren is at 5,300' and Wengen is a bit lower and on the other side of the valley. The Shilthorn is one long gondola ride up from Muerren. You get to the Jungfraujoch (train station) by cog train from the Lauterbrunnen train station. You will stop at Wengen on the way up and the way down. To note again, Muerren and Wengen are on opposite sides of the valley. Hotel recommendations for Muerren would be the Chalet Fontana or the Hotel Eiger.
Hi Nadine,
We haven't been to Muerren, but loved our stay in Wengen! Absolutely gorgeous scenery! Also, the Jungfraujoch is easiest from Wengen.
Paul
I stayed in both last summer - Hotel Eiger in Murren and Hotel Baeren in Wengen . I think they are both well worth it - great family run hotels. We hiked the Eiger trail to Wengen (from Grindelwald), then Hiked down to the Lauterbrunnen and up to Murren (via an alp hut and them through Gimmelwald). We did the other local hikes when we were in Murren. There are amazing views from both places! Do both if you can!
If you choose Muerren then by all means try to get into the Chalet Fontana for a truly apline chalet vacation. It's clean, beautiful views, wonderful hostess Denise Fussell will take excellent care of you. It's also very very affordable...about 35-40 chf per night per person including breakfast.
Thanks for all the good advice.
We will stay in Muerren and at Chalet Fontana!
Happy travels to all.
Elaine, I can't help with specifics as we have only stayed at Chalet Fontana. But if you want great views, you could also consider the Alpina and Hotel Bellevue.
We are planning a 25th anniversary trip to Switzerland. Since I was in Wegen many moons ago, I thought of staying in Murren. I would prefer to stay in one place, but we definitely want to hike near Wegen. Can we get there easily in a day to hike, or would we be better off splitting our time between the two? We have eight nights. Also, the hotel that everyone recommended in Murren is full. We definitely want a fabulous view. Between the Jungfrau, the Alpenruh and the Edelweiss, is one better situated? Also, with the Alpenruh should I get the Superior Mt. View? Or would the south with balcony at the Jungfrau be good. The superior double at the Edelweiss seems out of our budget, so we would be looking at the double there. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Elaine
