Has anyone spent time in Weimar,Germany? We will be in Germany this fall touring and have been thinking about seeing much of Eastern Germany--Berlin, Dresden, the Luther sites--and thought about spending a few days in Weimar. If anyone knows of good accomodations there or things to see that one should see, please let me know.
Hey Jerry, I may be pointing out the obvious to you, but... I was in Weimar once on a student trip to eastern Germany. We stopped there for the afternoon after seeing Buchenwald. We didn't stay overnight, but I just remember that we went there because Buchenwald was nearby, and it was a charming little town. So if you didn't already know that the concentration camp was there, that is definitely a sight you could go see...
I visited Weimar as a day trip last year. It is a nice place. The main sight is the old palace which is now a museum. This is set in parkland which is also very nice. I am not sure whether there is enough to see there for multiple days, but it would probably be a good base for day trips.
I too went to Weimar when I was a student...We stayed in a Hostel outside of the city. There was a group of us who went to Buchenwald, but there was another smaller group--the real German Majors--who toured more of Weimar and saw some sights related to Goethe. The sights themselves are lost in the mists of time. ; ) We all got back together to go see Wartberg where Luther hurled the ink pot at the Devil. I think it would be a great place to visit. Pam
