week in Provence- where to stay

We spent a week in Arles last year and are looking for a spot further east for next year. We are looking for a spot that makes sense. Love lavendar and just felt that the distance to Mt Ventoux and lavender and area was a little bit further than what we wanted to go for a day. Any suggestions for a town or a B&B further east? Thx in advance, Steve and Kim

A few of my favorite towns are close to Arles (St. Remy) but I also have stayed a number of times in Gassin, which is a tiny village near St. Tropez. It's a charming little village with a few hotels. I stayed at a private house there most times, but do remember staying at a hotel there once. Also, I love Ste. Maxime, which is less touristy than Cannes and has a lovely beach as well as good restaurants, shops and a nice market. There are many towns within reach. From there I have driven to a number of areas (Grasse, Eze, the Gorges de Verdun) One of the most beautiful views for the lavender is near Gordes at the Abbey de Senague(sp) I prefer staying in smaller places vs. big cities so I do not care for Aix.

Yes, the Abbey is wonderful. It was quiet when we got there but within a short time it was packed with tour busses.. The gift shop did a brisk business.. We did make it up to Sault..beautiful spot.. I think Aix is too big as well..Kind of defeats the purpose of being there in my humble opinion.
