Have a chance to see Munich about one week BEFORE their 7M+ tourist attraction called Oktoberfest which commences Sept 20 this year. Any input as to whether hotel accommodations will be available or do the attendees arrive much earlier for this event?

There should be a pretty good lull before Octoberfest starts. People working there may show up a little early but I wouldn't expect crowds before Sept 18 or 19.
Having said that, I showed up the first day of Octoberfest with no reservations and was able to find a nice pension for a decent price. It may have been a late cancelation. I'm sure if I had looked ahead of time everywhere would have been booked.

We were in Munich last year just before Oktoberfest (and for the first day) and had a heck of a time finding a place at an affordable price. We ended up finding a good place actually very near the Oktoberfest grounds (and 2 metro stops from the old city hall in the old town) but it took a lot of searching and I think we got ours because of a last minute cancellation. Hotel Herzog is the name of the place we stayed.
Try also searching apartment availability. Good luck!
