We will be flying into Frankfurt. Our son will be in Prague. We need to meet and then start a 3 wk. trip with him. We were thinking Rothenburg, then to Vienna, a circle trip thru the Bavarian Alps, drop down to Cinque Terra, then back up to Switzerland and end up back in Frankfurt. It seems difficult for us to meet him in Prague to begin. Any ideas about how (train or car?) and where it would be best and easiest for us to meet him to start our trip together? Thank you.
There is a Ryanair flight that goes directly from Frankfurt to Prague. Check them out if you haven't already - similar to South West airlines in the US (discount airline), super prices.
Boy, the rest of your trip sounds absolutely wonderful! Some of my favourite parts of Europe. Have a great time!
PS - Had asec, so did some checking on their site, Kathie. Looks like they fly that route Mon and Thurs only. Price right now looks to be about $50-60 USD average. (Depending on date, and optionals, etc.) Hope that helps!
Ryan Air doesn't fly in or out of Frankfurt.
Don't fall into that trap. Ryan Air uses a former U.S. Air Force base at Hahn, Germany. It's closer to Luxembourg than it is to Frankfurt. The only connections to Frankfurt Rhein-Main airport is by bus and takes almost 2 hours.
Chris, where are you really from? I don't think you are from Puyallup. No one in this country spells that word as "favourite", especially no one in the Great Northwest. That's the way they spell it in the British Isles. Hmm? Isn't that where Ryan Air is from?
Did you find a good alternative Lee?
Considering all the problems with Ryan Air, just about anyone.
In addition to the 1-3/4 hr, €12 bus trip, there is another very good reason not to consider flying RyanError the day you arrive in Europe. Ryan does not allow any excuses for not being on the plane. In case your flight into Europe is delayed and you miss the Ryan flight - so sorry, you lose! They don't just put you on the next flight like real airlines; your ticket is no longer valid and you will probably have to pay full fare for another one.
However, in the case of Luxembourg-Hahn to Prague, that is not likely a problem. Even if you are lucky enough to fly on one of the only two days they fly to Prague, your flight doesn't leave until about 7 PM or later.
Rothenburg would be a good place to meet.
Using a local RMV ticket (€6,95 pP) to Kahl am Main and a €28 Bayern-Ticket from there, about €21 pP, you can easily get to Rothenburg after landing in Frankfurt.
For his part, there are regular direct, or one change trains from Prague to Nürnberg; Rothenburg is easily accessible by train from Nürnberg.
Would it be simpler for us to meet farther South, perhaps in Vienna?
Rothenburg is between Frankfurt and Prague. If you want to go there anyway, why not meet there.
You could also arrange to meet him in Nürnberg, then, if you go on to Rothenburg, he could travel with you on the Bayern-Ticket.
BTW, you need a good map. Vienna is only slightly south of Rothenburg, but a long ways to the east.
Thank you!
