Have you heard good things about Economy Car Hire. They have the best price and seem to be based in the UK. Any reccommendations???

Another one I've had excellent service from in Spain is carjet.co.uk. They're a broker, so they deal with several different firms.

Check out autoeurope. We used europcar many times including Spain and were always pleased. They are at the airport in Madrid as well as throughout the country.
Expect/try to get a diesel car = savings on fuel.

We've always had good luck in Europe and Ireland with Hertz. I just checked Madrid to San Sebastian for a 1 week rental. The lowest quote from Hertz and from carjet is 187euro. And, with Hertz, we can add insurance for the entire rental for only $24.95 (that's for the rental, not per day).

Keri...I was interested to see the quote you got from Hertz out of Madrid. The cheapest I can find for a week starting 24 May is 241 Euro, without CDW. Did you use the website, or did you find it through a third-party site.

Norm, We're Hertz Gold members, so I login at their main page (hertz.com). There I use their standard search function, selecting the "return to a different location" checkbox. I have the "AMEX OPEN SAVINGS" discount (through my Costco card) so that is applied in the Discount/CDP/Club Code section.
The $24.95 is not their CDW coverage (which I decline). It is a plan through the AmEx card that adds the coverage to any car rental booked with that card. (Once we forgot and charged a one-day rental to that card -- ouch!)
