Ways for my kids to meet other kids in Paris

Our family will be spending the month of May in Paris, and I'm looking for ways for my three children (ages 8, 11, 13) to meet other kids while we're there. Any after school type classes to take part in, or anything like that? We're staying in the 5th arr.

We've spent a lot of time in Paris since my son was 11 yo (he's now 22) and one of his favorite places was the playground at the Luxembourg Gardens (in the 5th). He met lots of kids there from all over the world and had a great time. He made especially good friends with one kid and they stayed in touch for a couple years. I always liked going there too, they have comfortable chairs to sit in and it was heaven for me to just be there. I enjoy people-watching and I could relax, write postcards, write in my journal, read, etc.

If you contact the American School of Paris, they may have a list of some after school type programs for your kids. Do your kids speak any French?

Do you want them to meet French kids? Or are you just looking for them to be able to play with some other kids? For the latter, just go to a park and let the kids play. (Although at 11 & 13 they're less likely to find other kids there to play with.) For the former, you're going to have a tough time. In general, there aren't "drop in" activities for children. You must register at the beginning on the school year. Anything athletic - including dance classes - requires a medical certificate to participate. Also, unless you find something offered by the American Church, ASP, or Marymont, it's going to be in French. It's also towards the end of the year, and I know from having moved mid-year that there isn't much tolerance for joining activities other than at the start. You could check the bulletin board at the American CHurch as I know there are theater clases and other things in English advertised there and you might have better luck joining in something aimed at ex-pats.
