wardrobe for Spain in September

I am a first time visitor to Spain and would appreciate all advice on what to pack to wear during my visit to Spain in September. What about foot wear; are sandals appropriate? I generally wear slacks at home but should I pack dresses? Thank you!

Vanessa, can you be more specific about the area you are visiting? The climate in Spain can vary quite a lot from region to region and would influence your clothing choices. As for the slacks vs. dresses question, I think you could get away with either. I personally prefer dresses or skirts when I'm travelling just because they are more versatile - I can do sightseeing comfortably and still feel at ease in a church or a nice restaurant. On footwear, the question of sandals will depend on the region and what type of sandals you're considering. Keep in mind there are alot of cobblestone streets and those can be harder to navigate on sandals. There also might be alot of steep inclines or steps, depending on where you are.

Thank you, Liz. Also, what is the proper attire in the cathedrals. Must visitors wear long sleeves? Will the evenings be cool and will I need to bring a jacket or wrap? Thank you so much for your advice!

Most of Spain will still be warm - it is still 30 or higher in southern Spain. I generally wear cotton or linen pants and a linen or cotton top or tshirt. I would also generally have jeans with me. As for footwear, I would always wear the most comfortable sandals I possessed. And have other shoes to change into at night. Like you - I never wear dresses.

We were in Spain in April and visited cathedrals from San Sebastian to Tarifa and many in between, we saw visitors wearing short sleeves and shorts at ALL sites. The only restrictions we noticed were No photos in some and NO flash photos in others. A few even allowed flash photography!
