If you google "bastides france" you may find what you are asking about.
I'm out-classed, again by the wimmins. Most that I can think of in the south are at least as far as Languedoc. I would even have put the bastides much further west. The only other two close, and not north, that come to mind are Avignon and Aiques-Mortes.
@Norma, Can you help because bastide usually means a large house in Provence Cote d'Azur. What were you thinking of?
@Mimi, Do you want towns and villages or real cities? Most towns and villages perched on hills have ramparts still.
Bets: "Bastides" were fortified medieval villages. Google for more info. We have visited many.
What made the bastides unusual was that the whole ville came up at once - - it didn't develop over time. Duke Umptyfratz wanted control of an area so he built the town and decreed/bribed people to live in it.
