Walking Sticks

Anyone know if Walking Sticks will get through carry-on baggage inspection?

I doubt it...I brought one home from Spain and they made me check it, because of the pointy end. It actually made it all the way home, with its own luggage label attached!

"It all depends" on who is at security.

Once we were succesful, once not.

Last time I flew, someone had a HUGE beach umbrella as part of their carryon. I kept thinking that it would have made quite a club as a weapon., but I decided that 'beach umbrellas' were not on a list of prohibited items.

I collect canes and walking sticks and I have carried many back to the US. In the last few years tho they will only allow me to bring one for myself and one for my wife. The last time, in March in Roma,I was told by the security in Roma that he would arrest me if I said so much as one more word. Two months later Air France sent me a personal apology for the guards over reaction and the lack of help by their personnel. Bit help then, but perhaps an appeal to the flight crew might do some good.

Sorry, but I should have mentioned that I was forced to put it in checked luggage and it was of course broken.

Thanks, guys. I'll just check my carry-on and hope they don't lose it. You might find this funny: a few years back, I left them home and ended up sliping and sliding on a trail outside Appenzell - along came an older Swiss man who held up his hand, picked up a tree branch, and handed it to me (made me feel stupid).

Never had a problem. Always carry ONE stick with me on my way home, as I usually by a 'new ' one while on my trip.I always carry the stick so I suppose it is considered a necessity.

I was advised to check them. I wrapped them in bubble wrap and put them in a duffle bag.

I have a ocassionaly painful game knee so on steep unstable surfaces I really do need a cane to steady myself. I have a very lightweight cane that folds into 8 inch lengths. Has a round rubber tip. Never needed it in Greece but used it several times in Maine (USA). Go figure. Since it doesn't have a pointy tip I've never had a problem going thru security. It is not a replacement for a sturdy walking stick for serious hiking.
